THOUGHTS ON THE PRICE OF FUEL...
There has been much talk as of late about the price of fuel and the increasing demand for more fuel-efficient cars as opposed to sport utilities. The media has reported that because of the rising costs of fuel, consumers have stopped buying sport utilities with the same enthusiasm they had in the past and have instead increased their appetite for more fuel efficient cars.
I have watched and read about this topic with much interest as it involves my industry and our business. While there is no doubt that building more fuel efficient vehicles will be better for our environment in the future, most of the noise on this subject has been centered around the increasing costs of operation as it relates to the increasing price of fuel. I believe this consumer thought process is slowing consumer demand for sport utilities is flawed.
In the current marketplace, whether you are buying a new or pre-owned sport utility, the finance and lease rates as well as the prices of these vehicles have fallen dramatically as the price compares to values last year. These lower prices and rates relate to lower finance payments AND lower lease payments. What we have seen is that the average consumer will save more than enough money on their monthly payments to offset the rising price of fuel. Said another way, a consumer who buys a sport utility in 2008 vs. in years prior will most likely have a lower overall cost of ownership once you consider both the monthly payment and the monthly fuel cost. As an example, factory to dealer incentives increased by $4000 in September of 2008 vs. 2007. So, the deal you struck with the dealer in 2008 could be $4000 better than in 2007. $4000 buys a lot of fuel! On a 60 month loan, your payments would be about $80 per month less!
So, if you would like to own a sport utility but are daunted by the price of fuel, don’t be spooked. There has never been a better time to buy a new or pre-owned sport utility vehicle.
